ORGANIZATION: Bernadette's House, Inc.

Bernadette's House, Inc encourages and fosters an interest in knowledge and learning. Homework Help volunteers assist 5th-12th grade students with homework assignments. They provide general help with all school subjects 5-12, and also may specialize in one or two subjects up to the college-prep level.

Responsibilities:

  • Be present throughout the school year for two hours per assigned shift;
  • Assist students with their homework;
  • Respect the youth and provide positive encouragement;
  • Work with other volunteers and BH staff to run Homework Help sessions.


Qualifications:
  • Fluent and well-versed in written and spoken English;
  • Able to help with homework from grades 5-12 levels and for most school subjects;
  • Knowledge of elementary and high school Math and Science is an asset;
  • Able to relate well to youth and enjoy helping them;
  • Able to work in a cooperative team environment;
  • Students in 11th & 12th grades who maintain a 3.0 GPA (grade point average) or above in school are welcome to apply.

Time and Place:
Sessions take place at Bernadette's House once per week at a regularly scheduled time. Sessions run after school or in the evening (usually 3:30 pm-5:30 pm).

Commitment:
  • The duration of the school year (mid-September through May)
  • A commitment of a two-hour shift once a week is ideal.
  • A minimum commitment of a two-hour shift twice a month is required.
  • Those who have variable job or school schedules who cannot meet that minimum can volunteer as substitute Homework Helpers.
  • Applications may be accepted at any time.

Description

Bernadette’s House, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) faith-based charitable nonprofit organization that was founded in October 2012. Our volunteer staff is dedicated to providing a safe and supportive home-like environment for preteen and teenage girls who live in and around the Laurel, Maryland area. Careful consideration is made to match each girl in our program with a mentor who is dedicated to developing a nurturing relationship that encourages the mentee to venture on a journey of self-discovery and "dare to dream" of a life full of possibilities. Our program is designed to foster the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills that will enable the girls to make life choices that will have a positive impact on their future.
