Position Description:

The Sierra Club’s Engagement Coordinator plays an important role by helping to educate Sierra Club members and the general public-online and in person-about important topics-energy use and climate change, nuclear waste and Yucca Mountain, and our region’s treasured public lands.


The Engagement Coordinator will build the Sierra Club’s capacity for public education and engagement by developing stories and fact sheets across a variety of media. The Engagement Coordinator will also spend time outside at public events, as a Sierra Club outings leaders, and building relationships with other organizations serving the community. Special opportunities available to serve some of the time in Lake Tahoe and Mammoth and Bishop, Calif.


Throughout, the Engagement Coordinator will have access to the training, support and resources of one of the nation’s largest and most powerful environmental organizations.

Service Location: Reno, NV

Timeline for Service: September 2018 - August 2019

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide up-to-date stories and information about public lands, renewable energy, and other topics of interest on the Toiyabe Chapter’s website, blog, social media, and email;
  • Connect Sierra Club members and interested members of the public with opportunities to become involved in their community;
  • Support Sierra Club’s digital mapping inventory of trails in the Reno-Sparks area (training provided);
  • Support Sierra Club’s efforts to inform the region’s disenfranchised communities and communities of color about topics of interest (e.g., how to qualify for renewable energy financing, the availability of outdoor recreation in the region, etc.);
  • Build Sierra Club’s volunteer-led outings programs in Reno (with opportunities to serve some time in Tahoe and Mammoth, too);
  • Help organize Sierra Club events-house parties, community forums, movie nights, etc.-to educate people about topics of interest (public lands, renewable energy, etc.);
  • Improve Sierra Club’s systems and protocols for document and photo storage.

Qualifications:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Experience or interest in digital communications software-web management, Customer Relationship Management databases, social media, photos, spreadsheets, mapping, podcasts, and videos;
  • Able to travel as needed. Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required;
  • Friendly, outgoing, and able to interact positively with community residents, volunteers, staff and the public; interest and experience in planning events;
  • Demonstrated interest in the environment or related public interest issues;
  • Ability to understand and summarize complex issues and effectively communicate them to community residents;

Compensation:

In return for their service, AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance of $13,732, health benefits during their service, and will receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $5,920. In addition, members receive monthly professional development training.

Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation is a private, non-profit organization committed to raising awareness and appreciation of parks and open spaces through in-park, experiential programs offered free of cost to all citizens. -Provide innovative park-based programs for families, community, groups, and schools.
-Cultivate awareness, appreciation, and stewardship of our parks.
-Inspire citizens to take a proactive volunteer role in the preservation and improvement of our parks.
-Serve as fiscal sponsorship for community-led initiatives to enhance park infrastructure.
-Strengthen the bond between citizens and their parks.
