No previous teaching experience is necessary, only a love of reading, and a desire to share the gift of literacy. New volunteers are required to attend a free orientation session, and complete the online training modules, which can be adapted to fit most schedules. Trained volunteers are provided ongoing support as they work with students.
Literacy Connections volunteer teams currently provide drop-in classes for speakers of other languages throughout Columbia and Greene Counties. Especially needed are volunteers who can assist with the Hudson classes on Wednesday evenings from 6-8 pm and/ or Thursday mornings 10 am to 12 noon. We are also seeking more members for the Catskill Team which will be meeting Tuesday evenings from 6-8 pm in the near future.
Additionally, some students and tutors are matched for one-on-one instruction. We serve native English speakers with reading and writing instruction as well.
The follow-up session is scheduled for Tuesday, August 14 th from 6-8 pm at the same location or by one-on-one appointment. At the Orientation session you will learn about Literacy Connections, tutoring and other volunteer opportunities, and receive your login information to begin the online tutor training module. You will have a month to complete the online training.
You can sign up for the Tutor Training by e-mail to colgreene@literacyconnections.org or by calling 518-828-1792 ext 104. Please provide your name, e-mail address, phone number and area where you would like to volunteer when registering.
