Literacy Connections volunteer teams currently provide drop-in classes for speakers of other languages throughout Columbia and Greene Counties. Especially needed are volunteers who can assist with the Hudson classes on Wednesday evenings from 6-8 pm and/ or Thursday mornings 10 am to 12 noon. No previous teaching experience is necessary, only a love of reading, and a desire to share the gift of literacy. New volunteers are required to attend a free orientation session, and complete the online training modules, which can be adapted to fit most schedules. Trained volunteers are provided ongoing support as they work with students. Additionally, some students and tutors are matched for one-on-one instruction. We serve native English speakers with reading and writing instruction as well. The follow-up session is scheduled for Wednesday, October 17 th from 3:30 - 5:30 pm at the same location. At the Orientation session you will learn about Literacy Connections, tutoring and other volunteer opportunities, and receive your login information to begin the online tutor training module. You can sign up for the Tutor Training by e-mail to colgreene@literacyconnections.org or by calling 518-828-1792 ext 104. Imagine a world where you cannot speak the way you want to or need to. Imagine having to tell your child that you cannot help them with their homework because you are unable to. Imagine being an adult with no options for self-growth or forward momentum. Now Imagine an agency that has been around for 40 years, quietly helping adults in the community to achieve their goals. Imagine no more! We exist and we help Adults in the Community who are struggling with their reading, writing and/or speaking. As a non-profit, we train, match and support Volunteers so that they can work in the community with an Adult who has been interviewed, assessed and tested by us. We work at all levels! Some of our students cannot read at all and others cannot quite pass their TASC (formerly GED). Some of our students get off a plane from a foreign country on a Tuesday and are in our office on Wednesday with a relative or friend, inquiring about our ESL Classes. This 1.5 Hour Orientation is to introduce you to our agency and the services we offer. Upon completion of the Orientation, you will have the opportunity to sign up for the online training and begin the process of becoming a tutor. Our Program Coordinators support all Volunteers every step of the way with goal setting, teaching methods, materials and matches. Once you are trained, your Program Coordinator will work with you directly to ensure a quality Volunteer Experience. We love all of our volunteers, whether they are with us for 3 months or 3 years. Some of our volunteers have been with us for 30 years!! By lifting up those that are the most vulnerable in the community, we are also lifting up ourselves and the towns that we reside in. We see big and small goals every week: driver's licenses, green cards, college enrollment and employment are just some of the many things that our students are working towards. Many of our students have had very hard lives, filled with obstacles and tragedy. By simply helping, you become not only a tutor, but also a mentor, someone who becomes a voice for the voiceless. Join us today and become part of dynamic, social and progressive organization.
