Reading makes me smile!

Read for half an hour once a week with a 2nd grade student over your lunch hour. Reading mentors and kids explore the world by reading books provided by the children’s teachers, in the safety and security of an elementary school classroom. Our mission is to improve third grade literacy by mobilizing community volunteers to read with a student at a high-needs school once a week for 30 minutes.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to improve third grade literacy by mobilizing community volunteers to read one-to-one with children in Kansas City-area classrooms on a weekly basis.

Description

Lead to Read KC is dedicated to improving the basic literacy skills of children in our urban core. Why? Because fewer than half of Kansas City, Missouri third graders are reading on grade level. Launched in 2011, Lead to Read KC has grown into Kansas City’s largest literacy volunteer corps, connecting nearly 1,100 elementary students with adult Reading Mentors across the metropolitan area each week.
