Houston Transport Volunteer Position Description
This position supports the work of the Harris County Shelter, a Best Friends Network Partner
**Must be at least 25 years of age to volunteer with this opportunity**
Function/Impact:
- A team of two volunteers will pick up healthy, adoptable dogs or kittens from the Harris County Shelter and transport them to a predetermined destination, most likely outside Texas, for adoption. Drive the van back to the Harris County Shelter at the end of the transport trip.
Reports to:
- Best Friends Lifesaving Shelter Operations Manager
- Best Friends Houston Volunteer and Foster Coordinator
Time Commitment and Location of Work:
- Periodic transports will leave the Houston area year-round
- Time commitment will depend on the destination. Initial destination will be Salt Lake City, and other cities will be added over time. Each transport will be planned to take into account drive and rest time.
- All trips will leave from the Harris County Shelter, 612 Canino Road, Houston
Core Responsibilities:
- Safely and successfully drive the transport van (alternating every few hours with other volunteer) from the Harris County Shelter to receiving location.
- Assist with unloading of all dogs or kittens and paperwork from the van upon arrival at receiving location.
- Drive the empty van back to the Harris County Shelter
- Track and input total transport hours worked into the volunteer database
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Successful completion of transport volunteer safety training
- Must be at least 25 years of age w ith satisfactory driving record, in order to drive a Best Friends vehicle under Best Friends insurance policy
- Proof of valid/current driver’s license & insurance
- Must be able to safely drive and work in all weather conditions
- Must be able to bend, stoop, hike, walk, kneel, and lift
- Must be able to lift at least 30 pounds at a time
- Dog handling experience is a plus
