Literacy Connections provides free, adult, English speaking, reading, and writing instruction, by recruiting people who love books to share the gift of literacy. Literacy Connections volunteers currently provide drop-in classes for speakers of other languages in Valatie, Kinderhook, Stuyvesant Falls, Tannersville and Hudson. New initiatives are underway to offer a drop-in class in Catskill. Additionally, some students and tutors are matched for one-on-one instruction. We serve native English speakers with reading and writing instruction as well.
No previous teaching experience is necessary. New volunteers are required to attend a free Orientation session, after which they will complete the online training module, which can be adapted to fit most schedules.
Our next Orientation Session will be held at the Hudson Area Library, Friday, June 1 st from 2-4 pm. The follow-up session is scheduled for Friday, July 6 th from 2-4 pm at the same location or by one-on-one appointment. At the Orientation session you will learn Literacy Connections, tutoring and other volunteer opportunities, and receive your login information to begin the online tutor training module.
You can sign up for the Tutor Training by e-mail to colgreene@literacyconnections.org or by calling 518-828-1792 ext 104. Please provide your name, e-mail address, phone number and area where you would like to volunteer when registering.
