Neighborhood Youth Association is a non-profit after school program for low income youth. When our students reach high school, they apply for the Youth Leadership Academy. As Youth Leaders, students mentor and tutor younger students, undergo intensive college prep, receive academic tutoring and participate in elective classes.
Our elective classes seek to teach students new skills that enrich what they learn in school or at home. We currently offer Improv, Documentary Filmmaking, and Computer Programming. While these classes teach specific STEM or technical skills, they also improve students' confidence, public speaking, communication, and other important life skills.
We have never had a chess class before, so the instructor would have full control over the curriculum. We can provide any resources necessary. Our program runs Monday-Thursday from 4-7, so any time frame within those hours will work. The class can be any size the instructor is comfortable with.
If you love chess and want to help a great group of deserving, low-income students, please consider volunteering!
