Sewing Guest volunteers will assist visitors with informal fiber arts activities in the Studio, a dynamic maker-space offering real tools and materials to our visitors of a wide age range. The volunteer will serve as an "expert" in fiber arts and create additional capacity for the museum to offer additional experiences to our visitors.
What this role involves:
The Sewing Guest volunteer is responsible for creating a welcoming, relaxed environment for visitors to explore fiber arts. The volunteer will introduce different tools, including sewing machines, encouraging and guiding visitors.
- Welcome visitors with warmth and friendliness
- Actively invite both adults and children to play with and explore materials
- Introduce activities and interact with visitors as they engage with materials and tools
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for people who have a love for sewing and fabric arts and who would enjoy sharing that passion with our young visitors. We are looking for people who have knowledge and experience of basic sewing machine use and repair, including threading, replacing bobbins, untangling thread and trouble shooting. It is important that this person can guide young children and adults through sewing techniques without taking over the process. This role is a good fit for someone who enjoys interacting with people from a variety of backgrounds, and someone who wants to try volunteering at the museum on a one-time basis.
The following skills and attributes are especially beneficial for this role:
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work with groups of people and tolerate busy or crowded situations.
- Ability to follow oral instructions and ask for assistance and additional explanation as necessary.
- Ability and willingness to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Minimum of one three hour shift with the ability to do more if interested
- Shifts available: Monday-Sunday from 10am-1pm or 1-4pm every day, with an additional 4-7pm shift available on Fridays and Saturdays.
