ORGANIZATION: Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County

What is the NALC Food Drive?: The NALC Food Drive is an annual national food drive. Last year Second Harvest collected 250,000 pounds of food from this food drive, which is the equivalent of 208,333 meals for our neighbors in need. We could not accomplish that without the help of volunteers! For this food drive, the letter carriers distribute plastic bags to peoples’ homes prior to the event. People fill their bags with food donations, which the letter carriers pick up and bring back to their respective post office.

What to expect: As the letter carriers bring the donations back to the post office location, they need help unloading the trucks and putting the donations in our Second Harvest trucks which then come back to the food bank. This volunteer opportunity is physical in nature and does require some lifting and carrying of food items. A Second Harvest lead will be present to greet you, get you signed in, and explain the project.

Age Requirement:

  • 14-17-year-olds are welcome to attend
  • Must be accompanied by an adult 21-years-old or older
  • Must bring a completed minor liability form signed by their parent/guardian or will not be allowed to volunteer.
  • Accompanying adults must supervise minors at all times and volunteer alongside them.
