Our tutors are:

  • Dedicated people who enjoy sharing their gifts and knowledge
  • Compassionate individuals who understand others’ needs
  • Respectful partners who are willing to be flexible in their tutoring methods and plans for meeting their students' educational goals

After new students are assessed and assigned a specific skill level, tutors are matched with students according to their area(s) of expertise and availability. Tutors initially instruct students at their beginning level, and then progress to the next skill levels as their students become more proficient. Tutors also help students set goals for their learning, with the help of the Program Manager or Site Coordinator.

Volunteer tutors at Salem Avenue have the opportunity to work with students on-site from 8:00-6:00, Monday-Thursday.

Students and tutors can also arrange to meet off-site in public locations such as libraries and coffee shops if they wish to supplement their instruction during hours that the BLC on Salem Ave isn't open. Those interested in tutoring off-site must make prior arrangements with the Program Manager or Site Coordinator to ensure they have proper learning materials (provided by the Center) and are making sufficient progress toward the student's educational goals.
