Fairfax County history is in your hands! The Fairfax County Park Authority is looking for people to help revitalize and care for some of its historic properties.

On this work day, we will be painting the interior of the smokehouse at Sully Historic Site.

Sully was completed in 1799 by Richard Bland Lee, Northern Virginia's first Representative to Congress. It is on the National Register for Historic Places and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.

Mission Statement

Fairfax County Park Authority Resource Management Division Mission Statement We interpret and preserve Fairfax County's natural and cultural resources for the enjoyment, health and inspiration of current and future generations.

Description

Fairfax County Park Authority is fortunate to own and care for several historic houses, outbuildings, and surrounding landscape, but the needs are greater than the paid labor force can provide. The HSVC is designed to provide supervised and planned attention to the minor but crucial maintenance and repairs of those facilities and grounds by a group of concerned and knowledgeable volunteers. This group also serves as a presence for these unstaffed facilities to deter vandalism and unwanted activity.

  • Replacing door and window trims, stair railings, siding, and other basic carpentry work.
  • Painting of interior and exterior of buildings.
  • Removing invasive and problem causing plants.
  • Improving the landscape of the grounds.
  • Building and replacing fences.
  • Cleaning facilities in area of deterioration.
  • Caulking and sealing areas for water protection.
  • Documenting and reporting failing conditions.
  • Checking on facilities and grounds periodically.
  • Outreach at public events.
