ORGANIZATION: Austin Partners In Education

Austin Partners in Education will expand its College Readiness program to serve 100 rising 9th grade students in the summer of 2018. The program will offer personalized academic support to students needing preparation to meet the state mandated academic college readiness standards in Reading and Writing. Students that meet the standards can qualify for a variety of dual-credit education opportunities. Summer Associates will perform a dual role, in both direct service and capacity building. Each VISTA Summer Associate will provide 20 to 30 hours weekly of academic tutoring/mentoring to a group of approximately 10 rising 9th grade students, with a focus on reading and writing instruction aligned with the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Assessment. Reading instruction will primarily focus on building students’ skills in identifying inferences in a text, deciphering an author’s use of language and the main idea of a passage, and correctly analyzing literary devices. Writing instruction will primarily focus on persuasive essay writing, with the aim of improving students’ written communication skills and building their critical thinking through argumentation. Additionally, the VISTA Summer Associates will work outside of the classroom with APIE’s College Readiness Program team to develop and revise College Readiness curriculum/training materials used to prepare underclassmen for the TSI assessment.

Program Benefits: Choice of Education Award or End of Service Stipend, Living Allowance, Training.

Mission Statement

APIE provides college and career readiness support through individualized academic and mentoring programs to prepare students for success.

Description

APIE was originally created in 1983 as Adopt-A-School by the Austin Independent School District and the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce before becoming Austin Partners in Education, an independent 501(c)(3) in 2004. We work in partnership with Austin ISD to reinvent the urban-school experience and build a talent pipeline of local students to grow the regional economy. Since our founding, we have trained and placed nearly 17,000 tutors and mentors, who have supported over 37,000 Austin ISD students.

Our academic support and mentoring programs increase access to higher education. We utilize best practice learning models with proven results that have received recognition from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and have been cited as an example of Better Use of Community Resources by the U.S. Department of Education. We were also honored by the White House Initiative in Educational Excellence for Hispanics.
