Volunteer Drivers are needed for the local Road to Recovery Program
Transportation can be one of a cancer patient’s biggest roadblocks to treatment. That’s why the American Cancer Society Road To Recovery program provides patients in need with free rides to treatment.
For those who cannot drive themselves or have no other means of getting to cancer-related medical appointments, volunteers donate their time to give patients a much-needed ride.
A willingness to help
Right now, one of the biggest barriers to cancer care is transportation. Because, even the best treatment can’t work if a patient can’t get there.
Family and friends may help, but over the course of several months, they may not always have the time or resources to provide every ride.
That’s why a successful transportation assistance program can be a tremendous asset to the community, and an inspiration to a volunteer. Our volunteers have provided hundreds of thousands of rides for patients, but the need for drivers continues to accelerate.
How it works
To ensure quality drivers, the American Cancer Society screens every volunteer. They must also complete online training courses to prepare them for their new role. Drivers are able to specify their preferences on days willing to drive, distances, etc. And it is a very flexible opportunity!
Drivers need:
- A good driving record
- A current driver’s license
- Proof of adequate automobile insurance
- Access to a safe and reliable vehicle
- Schedule availability
- Regular desktop, laptop, or tablet computer access
*Additional screening and training will be required be required; contact us for more details.
