Neighbors, Inc. is a basic needs nonprofit serving northern Dakota County. We serve over 500 families each month with food, clothing and emergency assistance. The Clothes Closet thrift store, which is open to the public, has a dual purpose: proceeds from sales provide funding for Neighbors’ emergency and supportive services, and clients can receive free vouchers to shop in the store for needed clothing or household items. A staff store manager oversees the operations of the Clothes Closet, and more than 200 volunteers enable it to run.

Purpose

Neighbors is looking for a skilled marketing professional to create and implement a retail-based marketing plan for the Clothes Closet. By increasing sales in the store, you are increasing our ability to provide assistance to those in need.

Key Activities

  • Familiarize yourself with the Clothes Closet-its strengths, challenges and unique selling proposition.
  • Work with the Director of Marketing Communications and the Clothes Closet Store Manager to establish vision, available resources and timeline.
  • Identify a strategy to create brand awareness, higher sales and customer loyalty.
  • Create a marketing plan for the Clothes Closet utilizing low-budget methods. This may include social media, targeted emails, promotional events and signage when possible.
  • Establish metrics and method for tracking.
  • Implement marketing plan on established timeline. This may include research, drafting copy for print, photography etc.

Qualifications

  • Professional marketing experience; retail-based marketing a plus.
  • Ability to spend some time onsite to gain familiarity with Neighbors, the store and to collaborate with the Director of Marketing and the Clothes Closet Store Manager.
  • Creativity and agility in working with little to no budget-seeing it as a challenge rather than a frustration.
  • A willingness to learn about the organization and ask questions. Many of the clients Neighbors serves live in poverty and represent diverse backgrounds-must be respectful of people in a variety of situations and culturally sensitive.

Availability

The timeline on this project is flexible-we are most interested in finding the right person. Must be able to spend at least some time in the office (hours are 8:15 am - 4:30 pm). The majority of the work can be done remotely as works with the volunteer’s schedule.
