Hummingbirds at SBWCN
Spring and summer are the two busiest seasons at Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network. The organization will see thousands of orphaned animals in our care during the coming months.

Volunteer at Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network (SBWCN) today!

As with most non profit organizations, our capacity to meet our mission relies on the support of many volunteers. In service to approximately 3,000 animals each year, volunteers are needed 7 days a week, 365 days a year to help our Animal Care department run.

Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and return to the wild sick, injured, orphaned, or oiled wild birds and small mammals native to Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties, and to educate the public about living in harmony with wildlife.

Volunteering at a rehabilitation center is not an easy task, but is extremely rewarding. Your love of animals can lead you to volunteer and it is our hope that this love will develop into a commitment to the welfare of the animals at SBWCN and working along with our staff to reach our goals. Wildlife rehabilitation generates a lot of dishes and laundry and each species requires a specific diet. In addition to these tasks, volunteers will be taught how to feed and clean our patients at various stages of care. In the spring and summer, we also need volunteers to assist with the many baby animals requiring car e.

Right now we also need phone volunteers . Working on the Helpline can be very rewarding. Helpline volunteers are responsible for answering thousands of calls each year that come into SBWCN from the community asking for help with wildlife. You’ll spend your time coordinating transport and rescues, and educating the public on wildlife issues.

To become a volunteer you must attend an orientation, and make a six-month minimum time commitment. During those six months, volunteers are required to provide a minimum of one four-hour shift per week. We provide training for all volunteer positions, so no prior experience is required.

These positions are great for people looking for experience in:

  • Animal husbandry and hands-on animal care

  • Nutritional needs of different species

  • Examining and treating injured wildlife

  • An understanding of wildlife as it relates to humans and the environment

  • Communication skills

  • Data entry
