The volunteer instructor will teach a weekly Cultural Orientation class for newly arrived refugees. Cultural Orientation is taught in 4 consecutive classes every Tuesday from 10am to 1pm and covers topics introducing the refugees to life in the United States.
Responsibilities and key deliverables- Teach Cultural Orientation class using the curriculum materials provided by LSS-SW staff (topics include personal safety, health insurance, U.S. laws, personal hygiene, etc.)
- Provide a safe and comfortable environment for client learning
- Report any barriers or concerns with the learning process
- Work effectively with LSS-SW staff to coordinate class logistics and present material in a fashion conducive to client learning.
- Should be comfortable working with interpreters.
Volunteer must pass background checks and clearances. Previous teaching or public speaking experience preferred, but not required.
Working conditionsAll work will be completed in classrooms at the LSS-SW office.
Clearances required & trainingThis role requires a fingerprint clearance card ($65) the volunteer is responsible for the cost. All volunteers will complete a central registry background form (no cost) at a volunteer orientation.
Location & timeframeTuesday, 10:00am to 1:00pm at LSS-SW, Refugee and Immigration Services office in Central Phoenix. Volunteers should commit to teaching at least one class a month for at least 3 months.
