About

Lutheran Social Services is seeking a volunteer to provide training in basic to intermediate computer skills to refugee women, many of whom have never used a computer. Work closely with refugee clients to teach basic computer skills such as how to use a mouse, turn on a computer, and using Microsoft Word. Empower refugee women with skills that can lead them towards a path towards self-sufficiency in their new home.

Responsibilities and key deliverables
  • Teach weekly computer class using provided curriculum
  • Work with pairs of clients or tutor clients 1-on-1
  • Teach basic information including how to use a mouse, turn computer off and on, type, use Microsoft Word
  • Volunteer may work with more advanced students on topics such as resume writing, creating an email address, PowerPoint, etc. as desired
Qualifications

Applicants should be patient, flexible, and comfortable working with women who have limited English skills.

Working conditions

All work will be completed at Refugee & Immigration Services in the downstairs computer lab.

Clearances required & training

This role requires a Fingerprint Clearance Card. The volunteer is responsible for the cost of the fingerprint clearance card ($75). All volunteers are required to complete a free Central Registry background check.

Location & timeframe

Volunteers are needed on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 1pm at the refugee office located at 3443 N. Central Ave, North Rotunda, Phoenix, AZ 85012.
