In partnership with Vol-State, UT Extension and the Sign Club, we will be building a garden to beat all. In the process, we will learn lots of new things about our environment and about ourselves. We will kick it off Spring Break week, when we will hold a week long camp. It will include structured classes daily and a walk over to UT Extension on the Vol-State Campus, where we will see some beautiful established gardens and their arboretum. During this time, we will plant our own raised beds.

Volunteers who have a green thumb (or want one) are welcome to come and help. We will need chaperones and class helpers and then later we will need waterers/weeders. Corporate organizations can consider donating a little time and organize a group of your coworkers to do a day of service with us.

No desire to get dirty? Help us gather supplies (bagged soil, gloves and tools, garden hose, weed fabric, trellis, and fencing materials) to make this one for the record books. Sorry, no plants please. Donations accepted till March 24.

Volunteer scheduled hours:
Chaperones - March 26-30 one or multiple shifts daily (9a-12p, 12p-3p, or 3p-6p)
Weeders/Waterers - April - June (every other day after 5p) multiple shifts encouraged. We also encourage youth with parents (not just adults) for this task. We will share the harvest.

Volunteers are a critical part of our organization. Without volunteers, we don't have the expertise to train students in many of the areas they fall short. By simply investing time with students, you help to build thier self-confidence and social skills. By sharing a skill or craft you are helping to shape their goals and desires for the road ahead.

Background check and volunteer application are required. Hours are tracked via Track it Forward app and we appreciate and reward our faithful volunteers.

Students must adhere to the rules of the center. Disrespectful or inappropriate activity is not tolerated.

Description

We lead the next generation of warriors, and the battle they face is the battle of the mind!
Growing trends in teen homelessness, unemployment, mental health struggles and even suicide have prompted us to study the root of the problem. Most of the time, it is a sense of hopelessness. Too many teens do not see their full potential. They are bullied and even programmed by society to think that they have no worth. When it gets really bad, they do not have the brain development to see the possibility of hope.

We've learned that hope is a sense of self, safety and community. This is where our warrior is found! In 2020 we are helping teens to find their inner warrior. WAR PAINT Whether for battle or celebration, the painted face of the warrior is unique to the individual. STC uses art as a means of self-expression, healing and fun. ARMOR The warrior's armor is designed for battle. It protects the warrior's weakest parts. The armor we build is that of confidence, skills and wit. TRIBE A warrior does not go into battle alone. He is supported by his tribe. They find a tribe here at STC. We are artists, gamers, actors, athletes and activists.
Be a part of the movement to change the way we teach the next generation...the generation that will take care of us one of these days!
