Who we are : Spark engages communities to provide career exploration and self-discovery opportunities that help middle school students understand, experience and pursue what's possible. Through workplace-based mentorships at companies such as Facebook, Google, Apple and Intuit, students discover what's possible for their future and enhance their education through project-based learning.

Spark inspires middle school youth to pursue their interests, create bonds with their communities, and develop a life-long passion for learning.

Logistics : We are currently looking for volunteers to support Spark staff, school staff, families and students from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in San Francisco on Wednesdays, 1:00-5:00 pm from October 3rd - November 28th. Special note: Wednesday, October 3rd and Wednesday, November 28th will be 4:30-7:30pm. There is no program on October 31st for Halloween or November 21st for Thanksgiving Break. (We meet at the school and then take a bus to companies in downtown San Francisco.)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support students and mentors to develop relationships while working on social capital skills in small groups
  • Design and implement interventions for students who are not meeting Spark expectations
  • Help support Spark staff with survey collection and check-ins
  • Chaperone students on bus and ensure safe, timely travel from school to companies and back to school

Qualifications

  • Must pass a criminal background check processed by Spark
  • Must be available during Spark Labs & Volunteers Dispatch on Wednesdays from 1-5:15pm from October 3rd - November 28th
  • Access to a cell phone
  • Strong communication skills with adults and youth

Understand What’s Possible:
Labs

Seventh graders participate in Spark Labs, or 2-hour on-site workshops, hosted by local companies. Employee volunteers guide students through group activities that build skills and expand awareness of career options - and have a lot of fun while they are doing it!

Experience What’s Possible: Mentorships

Spark connects 7th-grade students with volunteer mentors based on common interests and skills for Workplace-Based Mentorships. Throughout a 13-week partnership, Spark Students and Mentors work together to complete a project related to their career aspirations.

Make Possibility Real: High School Pathways

Spark offers High School Pathways workshops to 7th and 8th-grade students so they can take action and feel equipped with the knowledge and resources to make the possibilities they’ve experienced real.
