The Melanoma Education Foundation is a non-profit public charity that provides life-saving services throughout the U.S. At last count our melanoma lessons were being used in over 1700 high schools and middle schools in all 50 states. The lessons educate students and teachers about early self-detection of melanoma, a skin cancer that is often fatal unless found at an early stage. Lives of students, teachers, and their family members have been saved because of the lessons.
Melanoma Warriors are volunteers who earn community service credit by confirming whether teachers in our database are still at their schools. We provide an Excel spreadsheet with school names, web addresses, teacher names, email addresses and detailed instructions for updating the information and entering it in an XL spreadsheet. Each spreadsheet has 60 high schools and/or middle schools.
No fundraising, selling, or phone calls are involved. The work can be done anytime during days, evenings, and weekends. We estimate volunteers will able to get the information for 60 schools in about 4 hours but, because the project is new and we work on an honor system, we ask volunteers to keep track of their actual hours so we can verify them in community service confirmation letters.
