Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the life span, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. We do this through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of people with autism; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions.

About the Walk

Autism Speaks Walk is the world’s largest autism fundraising event dedicated to improving the lives of people with autism. Powered by the love of parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, relatives, and supporters, the funds raised help ensure people of all abilities have access to the tools needed to lead 'their best lives’.

Join the Committee

Are you looking to get more involved in your community? We are looking for inspiring and dedicated volunteer leaders to help plan the 2021 Autism Speaks Chicago and North Shore Walks. Join the Walk Planning Committee and use your skills, passion, talent, and influence to help make a kinder, more inclusive world for people with autism! The commitment of individuals like you plays a critical role in raising the funding needed to fuel innovative research and lifelong supports and services. team and participant recruitment and fundraising mentors, corporate sponsorship outreach, Walk media outreach, school outreach and more. Committee members plan all aspects of the Walk. Some sub-committees focus on growing the event revenue by recruiting teams, soliciting sponsorships, and leveraging their networks. Some volunteers focus on marketing and outreach by getting Walk materials out in the community and finding opportunities to promote the Walk. Others focus on event production and find ways to enhance the day of event experience. No matter where your skills and interests fall, there is a place for you on this team!

What We Ask Of You

  • Join the committee and choose a subcommittee that best fits your skills and interests Team Recruitment, Team Retention, Sponsorship, Marketing and Outreach, Logistics or Mission.
  • Attend the Committee Orientation to receive training on the basics of autism, learn about the organization's programs and services, and receive an introduction to the Walk event model.
  • Participate in committee meetings/calls. Meetings are held once a month (via zoom) and are one hour long. Occasionally calls will be added as needed for subcommittees.
  • Attend and help promote official Walk Activities in the community.
  • Start or join an Autism Speaks Walk team at autismspeaks.org/walk, raise awareness and funds, and join us on Walk day to help us create an exceptional day-of-event experience for our participants.

Description

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 59 children in the United States today.
