YourWords STL is an after-school, tutoring organization dedicated to teaching St. Louis youth how to amplify one's voice through writing.

In this particular volunteer program, we meet in-person for 2 hours, two days a week in partnership with the Clay Community Resource Center. The Clay Center is a community oriented program to service the youth in the surrounding North St. Louis Area. The center will house multiple community support organizations, aiming to provide access and equity to the surrounding community.

We tutor young women and men ages 10-20, from public and private schools in the area. We believe that with our help, they will be able to finish the school year on top, having worked toward obtaining a high school diploma or other goals they have. The students who sign up or come by are very motivated and are anxious for the support we provide. Each week, we do 2-4 hours of general homework help according to each student's needs.

We are looking for volunteers at least 21 years, specifically skilled in the maths and STEM-related subjects with compassion for under-served youth. YourWords STL is committed to reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve through volunteers who support the mission of amplifying the voices of St. Louis youth. Applicants with diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Ideally we are seeking tutors who can attend most of the weekly sessions, as this provides for a valuable mentoring relationship to develop. However, we also always need tutors who can attend sporadically to fill in for our regular tutors when they need to take a day off.

If this sounds like something for you, please do not hesitate to contact info@yourwordsstl.org for more details.

Description

YourWords STL provides free creative writing programming and homework tutoring to young people in underserved areas of St. Louis. We partner with local organizations to provide workshops for their populations.

We partnered with Marygrove Children’s Home a therapeutic residence for children who have been abandoned or abused and have nowhere else to turn from 2015-2022. Starting in 2022, our tutoring has moved to Clay Community Resource Center in the Hyde Park neighborhood, offering tutoring twice weekly. The tutor volunteers work with students each week on homework as needed for school.

We provide stand-alone workshops with other partner organizations throughout St. Louis. Each year we bring students from various backgrounds together in collaborative writing projects. The tutoring we provide students, whether in person or virtual, becomes even more urgent and impactful, as disparities in resources grow in the wake of a pandemic.

YourWords STL is seeking volunteer tutors, willing to commit to 60-minute weekly tutoring sessions. We are seeking tutors from a variety of professional backgrounds, with strengths in math, science, English, finance, history, or political science, and we prefer tutors live in or near St. Louis MO. Thank you for taking the time to learn about us, and don't hesitate to contact us with any questions.
