YourWords STL is an all volunteer, after-school, tutoring organization dedicated to teaching St. Louis youth how to amplify one's voice through writing.

In this particular volunteer program, we normally meet each Monday from 4:00 -5:30 PM at the Marygrove campus located in Florissant, MO, on 44 beautiful acres overlooking the Missouri river. Marygrove is a school and residence with therapeutic programming for youth who have been abandoned or abused and have nowhere else to turn. However, this position is currently virtual due to COVID-19.

We tutor a group of young women and men ages 16 -19, from the transitional life program. Each week, we do about 75 minutes of general homework help according to each student's needs that day. We are looking for volunteers at least 21 years, specifically skilled in the maths and STEM-related subjects with compassion for under-served youth. YourWords STL is committed to reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve through volunteers who support the mission of amplifying the voices of St. Louis youth. Applicants with diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

We will provide tutor orientation, and workshop leaders will lead the sessions. To get started, Marygrove requires a (free) background check and application. We are happy to provide documentation of your service hours if needed for a school requirement.

Ideally we are seeking tutors who can attend most of the weekly sessions, as this provides for a valuable mentoring relationship to develop. However, we also always need tutors who can attend sporadically to fill in for our regular tutors when they need to take a day off.

Don't hesitate to contact our volunteer coordinator (candice@yourwordsstl.org) with any questions, and thank you for considering this opportunity!

About YourWords STL

Mission Statement

YourWords STL uses one-on-one tutoring, creative workshops, and collaborative writing projects to amplify the voices of St. Louis youth. We are committed to helping bridge cultural and economic divides in St. Louis by honing the ability of people to tell their stories, while ensuring that as many ears and hearts in the community are listening.

YourWords STL provides free creative writing programming and homework tutoring to young people in under-served areas of St. Louis. We partner with other organizations to provide workshops for their populations.

We have been partnered since 2015 with Marygrove Children’s Home a therapeutic residence for children who have been abandoned or abused and have nowhere else to turn. We provide regular weekly 90-minute sessions there to young men and women aged 16-20. Each semester we have weekly one-hour creative writing workshops led by local artist educators. The tutor volunteers also work with their students for one hour each week on homework as needed for school.

We provide stand-alone workshops with other partner organizations including Lift for Life Gym. Each year we bring students from various backgrounds together in collaborative writing projects. The tutoring we provide students, whether in person or virtual, becomes even more urgent and impactful, as disparities in resources grow in the wake of a pandemic.

YourWords STL is seeking volunteer tutors, willing to commit to 90-minutes weekly tutoring sessions. For the fall semester of 2020, all tutoring will take place via Zoom video conferencing. We are seeking tutors from a variety of professional backgrounds, with strengths in math, science, English, finance, history, or political science, and we prefer tutors live in or near St. Louis MO. Thank you for taking the time to learn about us, and don't hesitate to contact us with any questions.
