During these uncertain times, how can we help?

YourWords STL uses one-on-one tutoring, creative workshops, and collaborative writing projects to amplify the voices of St. Louis youth. We are committed to helping bridge cultural and economic divides in St. Louis by honing the ability of people to tell their stories, while ensuring that as many ears and hearts in the community are listening.
YourWords STL provides free creative writing programming and homework tutoring to young people in under-served areas of St. Louis. We partner with other organizations to provide workshops for their populations.
We have been partnered since 2015 with Marygrove, a therapeutic residence for children who have been abandoned or abused and have nowhere else to turn. We provide regular weekly 90-minute sessions there to groups of ten to twelve young men and women aged 16-20. Each semester we have weekly one-hour creative writing workshops led by local artist educators. The tutor volunteers also work with their students for one hour each week on homework as needed for school.
We also provide stand-alone workshops with other partner organizations including Lift for Life Gym. Each year we have brought students from different backgrounds together in our collaborative writing projects. In 2017, students from St. Louis Catholic Academy, Parkway NE Middle School, and Marygrove created books together. In 2018, students from Hawthorn School for Girls and New City School participated in "Crossing Delmar" and created poems together for a poetry podcast.
YourWords STL is seeking weekly and substitute volunteer tutors, as well as volunteers to help in the back office with fundraising, marketing, and general tasks. Thank you for taking the time to learn about us, and don't hesitate to contact us with any questions.
