Here's a sample of our volunteer opportunities:VIEW AS
YourWords STL uses one-on-one tutoring, creative workshops, and collaborative writing projects to address disparities in how we hear the voice of our youth. We are committed to helping bridge cultural and economic divides in St. Louis by honing the ability of people to tell their stories, while ensuring that as many ears and hearts in the community are listening.
YourWords STL provides free creative writing programming and homework tutoring to young people in under-served areas of St. Louis. We partner with other organizations to provide workshops for their populations.
We have been partnered since 2015 with Marygrove, a therapeutic residence for children who have been abandoned or abused and have nowhere else to turn. We provide regular weekly 90-minute sessions there to group of ten to twelve young men aged 16-20. Our program director or a visiting writer leads a brief creative writing lesson, and then students work one-on-one with a tutor to develop and their own work. The tutors also work with their students during these sessions on homework as needed for school. We aim to recruit tutors who will commit to weekly participation for the full academic year to allow for a meaningful mentor relationship to develop, although substitute tutors are always helpful as well.
In September 2016, we plan to begin regular weekly workshops with a second local partner, to be announced soon. We also provide stand-alone workshops with other partner organizations including Lift for Life Gym and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri.
YourWords STL is seeking weekly and substitute volunteer tutors, as well as volunteers to help in the back office with fundraising, marketing, and general tasks. Thank you for taking the time to learn about us, and don't hesitate to contact us with any questions.
