About

YourWords STL is an all volunteer, after-school, tutoring organization dedicated to teaching St. Louis youth how to amplify one's voice through writing.

In this particular volunteer program, we meet each Wednesday from 4:00 -5:30 PM at the Marygrove campus located in Florissant, MO, on 44 beautiful acres overlooking the Missouri river. Marygrove is a school and residence with therapeutic programming for youth who have been abandoned or abused and have nowhere else to turn.

We tutor a group of young men, ages 16 -19, from the transitional life program. Each week, we do about 75 minutes of general homework help according to each student's needs that day. While we have many writers who volunteer, we are in need of tutors for all subjects, especially math. Tutors do NOT need to be experienced writers or teachers. We are seeking people with a wide variety of backgrounds, an enthusiasm for reading and writing, and compassion for under-served youth.

We will provide tutor orientation, and workshop leaders will lead the sessions. To get started, Marygrove requires a (free) background check and application. We are happy to provide documentation of your service hours if needed for a school requirement.

Ideally we are seeking tutors who can attend most of the weekly sessions, as this provides for a valuable mentoring relationship to develop. However, we also always need tutors who can attend sporadically to fill in for our regular tutors when they need to take a day off.

Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions, and thank you for considering this opportunity!
