Lead to Read KC connects trusted, caring adult volunteers from every walk of life with kids in grades 1 through 4. Once a week, for 30 minutes, Readers and kids explore the world by reading books provided by the children’s teachers, in the safety and security of an elementary school classroom.

That’s it. There’s no prep and no take-home work. Just read with a child for 30 minutes, once a week during your lunch hour.

About Lead to Read KC

Kansas City Metro Area, Kansas City, MO 64108, US

Mission Statement

Our mission is to improve third grade literacy by mobilizing community volunteers to read one-to-one with children in Kansas City-area classrooms on a weekly basis.

Lead to Read KC is dedicated to improving the basic literacy skills of children in our urban core. Why? Because fewer than half of Kansas City, Missouri third graders are reading on grade level. Launched in 2011, Lead to Read KC has grown into Kansas City’s largest literacy volunteer corps, connecting nearly 1,100 elementary students with adult Reading Mentors across the metropolitan area each week.
