PODER Background
Each year, Chicago welcomes thousands of new, Latino immigrants who are inspired by the promise of a better life. But many find opportunities limited because of an inability to speak English and an unstable economic situation prohibiting them from dedicating time to language development. PODER, an English literacy, civic education, and employment training hub, has been empowering Chicago’s immigrant community with the necessary academic tools to promote human dignity, increase employment potential, and facilitate participation in the larger community since 1997. Today, we offer comprehensive, tuition-free English education and job training programs for all education levels. PODER ensures that students learn to speak and read English with confidence, navigate daily life with ease, and gain the necessary skills to enter Chicago’s mainstream job market.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
PODER is seeking English literacy volunteers (ESL) for our Integrated English Works program. Classes are held both during the day and in the evening at four sites on Chicago's southwest side. Each class is divided between a teacher-directed classroom setting and individual and/or small group sessions with trained volunteer literacy tutors. These one-on-one and small group volunteer tutor sessions form the backbone of our English Works program, providing personalized instruction to students and solidifying language acquisition.
PODER volunteer tutors work with students to define and achieve individual educational goals, review classroom material students are struggling with, select and execute activities to improve students' literacy skills (especially grammar and speaking abilities), and assist students with computer-based literacy activities.
This volunteer commitment is ideally 2-4 hours per week (more is always welcome!). Our Integrated English literacy tutors work with a teacher and class of students for an entire 16-week trimester.
The majority of our students have limited first language (Spanish) and/or low second language literacy, and for those individuals, volunteers are critical to ensuring students understand classroom material and succeed in becoming integrated members of U.S. society.
We are currently in need of both morning (9:00am-11:15am) and evening (6:15pm-8:30pm) volunteers.
