Position Summary

The Development department at Minnesota Children’s Museum seeks an intern to assist in the planning and execution of our annual fundraising event, the Play for All Ball. The evening will feature dinner, program, revenue generating games/activities, live band, dancing and an auction. The Fundraising Events intern will gain firsthand knowledge of event planning/logistics, marketing and fundraising in a fun and fast-paced non-profit environment. Duties will include light internet research, communications including writing letters and emails, data entry of auction donations, tracking ticket sales, managing registrations, webpage and social media needs, and assistance with other gala related events. This person will have the opportunity to work with many different departments at the museum but also outside vendors. This person must be able to work the day and night of the gala which is scheduled for Saturday, May 19, 2018. This position will also assist with the planning and execution of other stewardship and marketing type of events that are hosted by or at the museum.

Major Job Accountabilities

This is an estimate of the duties to be included in the internship. The exact duties and projects will be determined by mutual agreement of the intern and museum staff. All duties will be carried out with the direction and supervision of the Development Events Manager.

  • Assist Development staff in coordinating gala details. Tasks will include attending planning meetings, sending emails and writing letters to potential auction donors, auction item research, auction item and attendee data entry, and much more.
  • Provide assistance with event preparations; including auction item displays, gala set-up /décor, auction item and certificate creation, name-tags and much more. You will also work with outside vendors, MCM’s graphic designer on marketing collateral and other MCM departments.
  • Work with other members of the Development Team to coordinate sponsorship fulfillment, coordinate volunteers/staff at the gala and is responsible for our event database system, Greater Giving.
  • Assist the Development Event Manger in coordinating event planning/logistics for other museum events happening during the internship time period.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

1. Formal education in related field (development, marketing, communications, event planning).

2. Ability to organize time and work independently, follow directions and complete tasks in an effective manner.

3. Excellent written, verbal and organizational skills.

4. Computer skills, including word processing and excel.

5. Ability to work well with others as well as on an independent basis.

6. Skill in coordinating tasks and projects.

7. Minimum Junior or Senior standing in a post-secondary setting, senior standing preferred.

Training Provided

1. Intern orientation

2. Museum background and philosophy.

3. Assistance with database software.

4. Opportunity to attend all planning meetings and any event related activities to learn all aspects of event production.
