MEMBERSHIP & OPERATIONS VOLUNTEER

The Book Club of California is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and preserving the book arts, as well as the history and literature of the West. We seek an amiable, focused, and professional Membership & Operations Volunteer to support the club’s membership activities and day-to-day operations through assistance with administrative tasks and member-oriented projects. This volunteer will report to the Membership & Operations Director.

This opportunity is ideal for a recent graduate or student looking to gain experience in membership or operations administration.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Membership & Outreach Services

  • Membership & Outreach Services
  • Prepare and send new member packages and acknowledgement letters
  • Prepare and send new member check-in letters
  • Create and update membership profiles in Salesforce
  • Assist with preparations of membership materials (brochures, renewal letters, statements, acknowledgement letters) for annual renewal campaign
  • Support Membership & Operations Director at new member party
  • Update email database by adding new member emails and removing lapsed members from mailing lists
  • Prepare for membership outreach initiatives, including book fairs, neighborhood outreach, and recruitment mailings
  • If available, assist Membership & Operations Director in representing the BCC at local antiquarian & book arts fair

Administration & Operations

  • Add new emails from guest book to MailChimp database after each club event
  • Fulfill bookshop sales by packaging and shipping book/keepsake/broadside orders
  • Maintain office files by ensuring proper organization and (with Membership & Operation Director’s supervision) culling aging paperwork to shred or move offsite
  • Manage office and hospitality supplies, including reordering when necessary
  • Assist with maintaining and organizing store room and physical inventory
  • Perform occasional general upkeep of club rooms

QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Required

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Superb oral and written communication
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a positive, flexible attitude
  • Commitment to excellence and high personal standards of integrity
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs. and sit for long periods of time

Desired

  • Prior work/volunteering experience in an administrative and/or customer service oriented position
  • Strong interest in history, literature, and the art of the book
  • Prior experience with a membership organization

Training will be provided to the volunteer as needed on a project basis. No orientation is necessary to begin volunteering in this position.


TIME COMMITMENT
3-4 hours a week
*Please note we are open during weekdays only, 10:00am-5:00pm

COMPENSATION

This is a volunteer position and is not eligible for monetary compensation. The volunteer will receive a complimentary membership equivalent with the Student Membership after volunteering once per week for three-months. The membership will remain active for as long as the volunteer continues in the Membership & Operations volunteer position.

The Book Club of California supports the art of fine printing related to the history and literature of California and the western states of America. The Book Club honors its mission through the continual research of these topics, and the activities of publishing, programming, and exhibitions. The Albert Sperisen Library further preserves and promotes the art of fine printing with its holdings of reference, fine press, and rare materials.

The Book Club of California is a non-profit, membership-supported organization founded in 1912. The club supports the art of fine printing related to the history and literature of California and the western states of America through a dynamic series of publications, public programs, and exhibitions.

WHO WE ARE

Our membership is made up of a diverse and vital community united by a love of fine books and the marriage of content and craft. BCC members include printers, binders, typographers, historians, librarians, curators, collectors, readers, scholars, and people who simply love books. They hail from all over the world, representing 38 states and 8 countries.

WHAT WE DO

We print limited edition and letterpress publications collected by individuals, libraries, and institutions around the world, and host dynamic programs and exhibitions that offer insight into publishing, printing, literature, and the history of California and the West. Our special collections library is full of noteworthy fine press books and ephemera from the region, as well as reference materials on printing history and book arts.
