About

Is literacy a passion for you? Southwest Valley Literacy Association is searching for a new volunteer Executive Director to expand the reach of this non-profit organization. We are a local literacy organization serving the cities of Avondale, Tolleson, Goodyear, Litchfield Park and Buckeye in the West Valley of Phoenix.

For more than 40 years, Southwest Valley Literacy has taught adults English language skills enabling them to gain confidence, improve their job potential, and allowing them to become fully engaged in the community.

In this volunteer position, the Executive Director will be responsible for overall management and leadership of this vibrant organization of volunteers. Your passion for providing English as a Second Language (ESL) training to adults will lead to great results for this organization and the community.

The demand for tutors in the West Valley continues to grow as more non-English speaking adults discover this literacy program. With an ongoing need for new tutors, this position involves oversight of recruiting, training and retaining existing tutors to meet the growing needs in the area.

The Executive Director manages the overall ESL program as well as one paid, part-time bilingual office support position whose responsibility is student intake and administration of the ESL program.

Overall funding for this program comes from the cities we serve plus donations from private individuals. Each year renewal grants are requested of the cities we serve to help sustain the mission. Maintaining the fiscal health of the organization allows the organization to grow its volunteer tutor group to match up with eager students from the five cities we support. A detail oriented leader with strong organization and communications skills will succeed well in this position. Opportunities exist to expand the Board and cultivate new volunteer positions to help run the organization.
