Mission Statement

Southwest Valley Literacy Association is dedicated to providing English Literacy education to both English and non-English speaking adults in the Southwest Valley communities of Maricopa County. SVLA enables adults to improve their employability, help their children with school, and become engaged in their communities!

Southwest Valley Literacy is an independent non-profit serving adults since 1976. We train volunteer tutors to teach English in small group settings. Volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and do not need to speak any language other than English, and are asked to volunteer 2 hours per week. Tutors and students are residents of the West Valley (Avondale, Goodyear, Litchfield Park, Buckeye, Tolleson).

I received my certification and began tutoring in July 2015. What an amazing experience it has been. I was anxious before my first class, but I quickly got over that once I saw the dedication, hard work and appreciation from my students. SVLA provides the workbooks for tutors and the students. Even though I have no background in teaching and I only know a little Spanish, that hasn't been a problem. The program materials make it very easy to teach English to non-English speaking adults. Seeing my students gain more confidence has been incredibly rewarding. In a very short time, we have developed a fun and trusting relationship. I can honestly say I look forward to meeting my students each week.
