ORGANIZATION: Bowery Residents' Committee, Inc.

This 103-bed women’s shelter in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn serves a population suffering from multiple issues including mental illness, substance abuse and serious medical problems. The program offers the full range of case management services as well as on-site psychiatric and medical care. It also incorporates a workforce development component for women who can benefit from this service.

Well, so do a number of our residents at the Women's Residence! In an effort to foster the love of reading, as well as engage our clients in conversation, we would love to host a weekly reading group. Topics can cover current events, short stories, poems, Chicken Soup anecdotes or any other format that can be read aloud and shared in a single sitting. Not only will this continue our clients' passion for reading, but the conversational insight provided afterwards will prove rewarding for all participants. If you are available mid-week in the evening, or even on Sunday mid-day, this is the perfect fit for you.

PLEASE NOTE: In order to insure the integrity of the BRC volunteer program, as well as the well being of the clients we service, all interested parties must complete a New Volunteer Registration form and attend an orientation, prior to receiving an assignment. Apologies, but we are unable to accept walk-ins.

About Bowery Residents' Committee, Inc.

Location:

131 West 25th Street, 12th floor, New York, NY 10001, US

Mission Statement

Helping people reclaim lives lost: We restore hope and dignity by offering opportunities for health and self-sufficiency.

Description

BRC: Helping People to Reclaim Lives Lost. BRC is a leading provider of housing and services to thousands of New York City's individuals in need. Offering a hand-up, not a handout, BRC asks one simple question: What can we do for you? BRC sees the potential in each individual it serves and provides each the opportunity to find it. Whatever our clients may seek, BRC has it, 24/7/365: outreach to homeless people living in public spaces, drug treatment, mental health care, comprehensive medical services, vocational services, and supportive communities in which to live. BRC succeeds by building trust with the people we serve; listening, and then acting, providing housing - both temporary and permanent. Building trust takes time, and a compassionate, dedicated staff of almost 1,000 employees and 1,000+ volunteers that persevere 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, never giving up.
