ORGANIZATION: Bowery Residents' Committee, Inc.

The BRC Palace Employment program is a 110-bed men’s shelter designed for those in need of job training and employment. Located in the former Palace Hotel on the Bowery, the program-oriented shelter provides temporary housing for a period of six to nine months. During this time, clients are guided through a structured continuum of treatment and training designed to give them the skills they need to address any substance abuse and/or health issues and to find and maintain permanent employment and housing. In the same building is the Bowery Safe Haven, which houses clients that are chronically street homeless individuals who have not been successful in other environments, but are willing to leave the streets and work on securing permanent housing. As a low-demand program, participants are not required to maintain sobriety and do not have any curfew; the one requirement upon entering is that they actively work toward obtaining housing.

If you enjoy painting, drawing, creating collages, or simply using any supplies available to express yourself artistically, we would love to put your talents to work with a weekly arts and crafts group. Through art, our clients are able to express themselves in ways that they may not know themselves, and this would be a fantastic vehicle with which we can help them in their ongoing services. We are rather flexible with days and times, however a weekend or weekday afternoon would be ideal. So bring your talents and host a group!

PLEASE NOTE: In order to insure the integrity of the BRC volunteer program, as well as the well being of the clients we service, all interested parties must complete a New Volunteer Registration form and attend an orientation, prior to receiving an assignment. Apologies, but we are unable to accept walk-ins.

Mission Statement

Helping people reclaim lives lost: We restore hope and dignity by offering opportunities for health and self-sufficiency.

Description

BRC: Helping People to Reclaim Lives Lost. BRC is a leading provider of housing and services to thousands of New York City's individuals in need. Offering a hand-up, not a handout, BRC asks one simple question: What can we do for you? BRC sees the potential in each individual it serves and provides each the opportunity to find it. Whatever our clients may seek, BRC has it, 24/7/365: outreach to homeless people living in public spaces, drug treatment, mental health care, comprehensive medical services, vocational services, and supportive communities in which to live. BRC succeeds by building trust with the people we serve; listening, and then acting, providing housing - both temporary and permanent. Building trust takes time, and a compassionate, dedicated staff of almost 1,000 employees and 1,000+ volunteers that persevere 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, never giving up.
