About the opportunity

Action Tutoring is an exciting educational charity that supports young people facing socio-economic disadvantage to achieve a meaningful level of academic attainment. This enables them to go on to further education, employment or training. We partner high quality volunteer tutors with primary and secondary school pupils to increase their subject knowledge, whilst building on confidence and study skills.

We will place you as an English or maths tutor in one of our partner schools. You will work with one or two pupils for an hour a week across the course of a school term; either before or after school. Sessions are delivered on the school premises at the same time each week; we also have one-off volunteering opportunities. We provide all of our tutors with training and resources, and we will also process a free DBS check for you.

About Action Tutoring

Action Tutoring supports young people facing a socio-economic disadvantage to achieve a meaningful level of academic attainment, with a view to enabling them to go on to further education, employment or training. We do this by partnering high quality volunteer tutors with pupils in primary and secondary schools to increase their subject knowledge in maths and English, confidence and study skills. We currently operate in seven cities across England: Birmingham, Brighton and Hastings, Bristol, Liverpool, London, Newcastle and Sheffield.

What are they looking for?

We're looking for people who are interested in education and want to make a difference to a young person's future prospects. Enthusiasm for the subject you're tutoring (English or maths) is crucial.

We generally require our tutors to either be educated to degree level, or to be studying for a degree, and to have a B grade (or above) at A Level (or equivalent) in the subject they wish to tutor. English or maths-related A Level subjects are also considered, such as: history, politics or sociology (for English tutors) and physics, chemistry and economics (for maths tutors).

Experience working with young people is helpful but not essential. All volunteers must be willing to undergo a DBS check.

Practical Considerations

We will pay travel expenses of up to £5 per tutoring session attended.
