NOT EVERYONE CAN READ THIS. Approximately 11% of Dutchess County’s residents lack basic literacy skills and 15% speak a language other than English at home. These adults cannot read a job application, write an email or speak with their child's teacher. Lack of basic literacy or English language skills limits access to services, employment, citizenship and engaging in society. But we can change this with your help. When people learn to read, they become positive contributing members of the community and their children are more likely to succeed in school.
Literacy Connections of the Hudson Valley, Inc. is the only organization in Dutchess County serving basic literacy adults who cannot function in a typical classroom as well as ESL students. We recruit, train and support volunteers to tutor adults, one-to-one or in small groups. Literacy tutors provide individualized, student-centered learning. They help students achieve personal goals, become citizens, learn English, get a job or simply read for pleasure.
VOLUNTEER TUTORS ARE NEEDED to tutor our growing community of adults one-to-one or in small groups. Online training is provided free of charge and can fit most schedules. No prior teaching experience is required, just a love of reading.
Join our Volunteer Tutor Team today and help adults in our community learn to read, write and reach their potential.
