Words Alive is looking for one volunteer mentor to pair with a bright, inspiring student in need of collegiate support within our scholarship program. This student studies in Northern California, and would like a mentor to encourage, guide, and talk with her throughout her experience.

Mentors: A mentor is a volunteer who advises a scholarship recipient during the program year (August 2017-May 2018) by providing support (e.g., meetings, advice, and help with fund requests for the scholarship). This is a rewarding opportunity with a year-long commitment, but is one you can manage on your own time as it requires you and the student to meet when possible for both parties.

What is the time commitment?

  • Training: Words Alive will host a training/orientation for new mentors - date TBA. We are looking to recruit professionals in the community (e.g., social workers, SDCOE employees, counselors, scholarship coordinators) as well as Momentum Learning students (current/former) to serve on a panel. The intention is to have a question and answer session that will help prepare the mentor for his/her role.
  • Fun Event: We will host a Mentee/Mentor Orientation in August 2017 (TBD). This will be a two-hour "get to know your mentor/mentee" session. More information to come on this FUN event!
  • Role: Meet with your mentee once a month. The meetings can be conducted by phone, Skype or in-person, and are designed to complete a "progress report" to ensure that the recipient (or mentee) is receiving enough support.
  • Paperwork: Submit fund requests monthly (first Monday of each month) to the Words Alive Program Manager.

Please note that though your relationship will be primarily virtual, you are welcome to attend all Words Alive events and participate in the program in San Diego. You will be selected by application for the position. Thank you for your interest!
