ORGANIZATION: Sumner Teen Center

Sumner Teen Center feeds up to 20 students (usually 10-15) on every Friday night. Come share your favorite recipe with us or just come make tacos or pizza. We love learning new recipes. Our teaching kitchen looks very similar to the one in your home. We have everything to cook with. We just need to know that our community supports us and is ready to help our kids get ready to be adults. So share your mad cooking skills with us. You will be glad you did!

Sumner Teen Center is a 501c3 non-profit, who depends on the support of citizens, businesses and local government agencies to grow. We value our volunteers and want you to feel privileged to come work with us.

Our students are good kids. We do not cater to a certain social class or ability - All students entering the 7-12th grades are welcome. We do not tolerate behaviors that are destructive to self or others and we have the right to dismiss students who exhibit such behaviors. Students attracted to our organization are typically introverted, creative minded, gamer and uniquely gifted individuals who are just looking for like minded friends.

We do allow student led cooking for the benefit of earning service hours. Students must be prepared to lead others and complete a full meal.

Description

We lead the next generation of warriors, and the battle they face is the battle of the mind!
Growing trends in teen homelessness, unemployment, mental health struggles and even suicide have prompted us to study the root of the problem. Most of the time, it is a sense of hopelessness. Too many teens do not see their full potential. They are bullied and even programmed by society to think that they have no worth. When it gets really bad, they do not have the brain development to see the possibility of hope.

We've learned that hope is a sense of self, safety and community. This is where our warrior is found! In 2020 we are helping teens to find their inner warrior. WAR PAINT Whether for battle or celebration, the painted face of the warrior is unique to the individual. STC uses art as a means of self-expression, healing and fun. ARMOR The warrior's armor is designed for battle. It protects the warrior's weakest parts. The armor we build is that of confidence, skills and wit. TRIBE A warrior does not go into battle alone. He is supported by his tribe. They find a tribe here at STC. We are artists, gamers, actors, athletes and activists.
Be a part of the movement to change the way we teach the next generation...the generation that will take care of us one of these days!
