ORGANIZATION: Bridges To Independence

We’re currently gearing up to start our annual youth Lemonade Stand! This kid-run enterprise is the centerpiece of Bridges to Independence’s summer youth program.

Participants practice good decision-making, a strong work ethic, and reliability through promotion, prep/cleanup and management of their own lemonade stand. At the same time, youth learn valuable financial literacy skills through a series of five workshops.

Half of the money raised is used for participants to open their very first savings account and the other half supports an end-of-summer field trip.

We have multiple volunteer positions open through August for 2-3 volunteers each:

Wednesday June 21st 6:00-7:30pm (1st day-Educational Workshop)

About Bridges To Independence

Location:

Mission Statement

Bridges to Independence leads individuals and families out of homelessness and into stable, independent futures. We offer a continuum of aid and support for all family members, helping them attain financial security and move forward into self-sufficiency. A private, nonprofit organization, Bridges has been working with and for families experiencing homelessness since 1985, when we were founded as the Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless.

Description

In a nutshell, "what we do" is build bridges to independence for homeless families and families at risk of becoming homeless. Our bridges - our services - strengthen these families and provide them with the stability, skills, knowledge, and community networks to become self-sufficient. We offer supports for every family member - adults and children alike. Our short-term goal is to help individual clients right now. Long-term, we aim to break the inter-generational cycle of poverty by preparing today’s struggling kids to be tomorrow’s successful adults. From housing to financial literacy, from tutoring to youth development, from life skills to career counseling, we tailor a continuum of services. Some activities are required, some are optional, and some are just plain fun.
