GeekGirlCon celebrates and honors the legacy of women contributing to science and technology; comics, arts, and literature; and game play and game design by connecting geeky women worldwide and creating community to foster continued growth of women in geek culture through events. JOB SUMMARY
The Community Engagement Director oversees all efforts toward growing GeekGirlCon beyond the annual convention, including tabling efforts, community events, and year-round programming. They manage the Outreach Events team, as well as other Outreach/Community Engagement roles, and ensure positive relationships between GeekGirlCon and our community partners. They ensure that all GeekGirlCon outreach events align with and support our Mission and Values, build brand recognition, and engage with our community.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintains an interna and externall event calendar to ensure communication and alignment with the rest of the organization and outside community;
Evaluates and reports back the success and failures of outreach and community engagement efforts, and makes adjustments accordingly;
Acts as a public ambassador of GeekGirlCon;
Works and manages team managers to create and implement an annual budget;
Runs department meetings;
Acts as coordinator of the "GeekGirlConnections" zone at the annual Convention: recruiting and encouraging mission-aligned partners/community based organizations to apply for a free table at the conference;
Conducts yearly reviews of all Community Engagement Department staff;
Responsible for overseeing team growth, including new hires and position changes;
Serve as part of GeekGirlCon's Executive Team in making sure that day-to-day goals are being met and long-term plans/visions put in place by the Board are continued;
Develops strategic plan (including data collection) and metrics for cohesive outreach that takes into account GeekGirlCon’s Mission & Values, short-term and long-term goals, Marketing priorities, and the abilities of the team to execute outreach ideas;
Makes contacts and build relationships in "geeky" and event-relevant community to improve outreach objectives. Connects other staffers with those contacts for execution of projects.
Acts as backup when event hosts are unavailable and for outreach events (ability to table, manage outreach box (packing & unpacking), cash box responsibility, etc.)
REQUIRED Qualifications
Experience working within/membership and cultural competency in two or more of the following communities: communities of color, parents/caregivers and children, LGBTQIA+;
Ability to represent GeekGirlCon at event tabling opportunities, including managing the outreach box (up to 30 lbs, loading and unloading), cash box responsibility in line with accounting rules, etc.;
Enthusiastic self-starter;
Experience running a team;
Experience with interdepartmental collaboration;
Excellent communication skills;
Ability to delegate and follow-up;
Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative management style;
Experience in creating and tracking budgets;
Must be comfortable speaking as a public representative of GeekGirlCon;
Ability to travel to events around the greater Seattle area;
Maintains discretion and professionalism when dealing with sensitive and confidential information and/or material;
Previous community engagement/outreach experience.
PREFERRED Qualifications
Minimum 6-9 months commitment to this volunteer position
Competence with online project management tool (BaseCamp or similar)
Proven event coordination and management skills/experience
Availability for calls and meetings during traditional work hours (M-F, 9am-5pm)
Project/Program management experience
Competence with Google Suite tools
What It Means to Volunteer as GeekGirlCon Staff
GeekGirlCon staff positions are all volunteer, non-paid positions.
Attendance in-person or remotely for staff and departmental meetings is required.
Must maintain prompt and professional correspondence.
Most work is conducted over email and with in-person meetings in the Seattle area.
10-15 hours per week of work is required for this role (including meetings, etc).
The staff is a team of highly dedicated, geeky, and passionate volunteers; it’s a lot of hard work, but an amazing experience with lots of opportunity to help build GeekGirlCon for the future!
