ORGANIZATION: Amherst H. Wilder Foundation

Community Services for Aging
Wilder's Community Services for Aging operates several community-based programs for older adults and their families.

As a co-leader for Powerful Tools for Caregivers, you’ll guide caregivers and/or older adults through an established curriculum. You’ll partner with another Wilder volunteer or staff person to lead the evidence-informed series, using scripts and guidelines as prescribed by the program. With your help, we can give caregivers in our community the support they need.

Caring for a family member or friend with a chronic condition can be physically, emotionally and financially draining, but Wilder Foundation is here to help. Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an evidence-based self-care education program that builds skills for caregivers, so they can take better care of themselves as they care for others. The six-week class helps to minimize the potentially negative impacts of caregiving, and research on the program consistently shows participants develop increased self-efficacy. As a volunteer, you will be trained in this dynamic curriculum and share it with up to 15 caregivers per class.

Responsibilities include:

  • Attend September Powerful Tools for Caregivers Leader trainings (five 3-hour webinars) to learn the easy-to-implement, scripted curriculum
  • Review materials and prepare for classes
  • Lead a two-hour weekly class for six weeks with up to 15 caregivers beginning in January (this class will most likely be virtual)
  • Lead one additional class within 12 months of completing your class leader training

Benefits and training details:

  • Wilder will provide 15 hours of required training and a volunteer stipend of $150 for leading the full six-week program.
  • Build relationships with local community members.
Minimum requirements include:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be comfortable interacting with and assisting people of varying ages, abilities, economic, social, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Ability to meet Wilder Foundation’s guidelines for acceptable background check. Wilder will be conducting criminal background checks for all volunteers in this position.
  • Helpful demeanor and strong customer service.
  • Highly respectful of confidentiality.
  • Dependable and punctual.
