We’re currently searching for an imaginative and proactive developer to join our team as the new Director of Technology. In this leadership role, you will lead the technical development of the AsylumConnect catalog. You will work with the rest of the leadership team as well as our web developer associates to ensure that the AsylumConnect catalog remains as user-friendly and visual as possible. This is a unique opportunity to help implement our vision of providing the first online, centralized resource database for LGBTQ asylum seekers in the U.S. If you have strong technical skills and a passion for advancing socially impactful technology, we want to hear from you!

Responsibilities:

  • Report directly to (and work closely with) the President.
  • Lead the technical development of the AsylumConnect catalog and oversee/utilize related associates (small team of web developer associates, user experience developer associate, etc).
  • Work closely with the President and the Director of Data Management to ensure that all technical catalog development matches our long-term vision for the catalog.
  • Collaborate with the Creative Director to improve the visual appeal and user experience of the AsylumConnect catalog.
  • Work closely with the President, Director of Finance, and Director of Data Management to set a comprehensive target timeline for catalog development, including: technical functionality, scaling the catalog to additional U.S. cities, and estimated short-term and long-term funding needs.
  • Participate in seeking out and submitting applications for available grant funds related to technology.
  • Identify user needs and goals through user-centered design research.
  • Conduct usability testing and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Design, code and modify the AsylumConnect catalog website.
  • Design and develop iOS and Android mobile applications.
  • Assist in data collection (both quantitative and qualitative) and the creation of detailed, transparent case study reports for each new city the catalog is scaled to.
  • Directly oversee/manage assigned associate position(s): Small team of web developers, user experience developer, etc.
  • Act as primary point of contact between AsylumConnect and any outsourced technical development assistance.

Qualifications:

  • Strong technical skills with passion for web design and development.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in (or current undergraduate student majoring in) computer science and engineering or related engineering.
  • Willingness and ability to prioritize AsylumConnect.
  • Experience with web application development.
  • Working skill set in web design and development and/or in Squarespace, HTML, CSS, WordPress or other content management system(s).
  • Proficient at programming in Java, Python, C/C++.
  • Must have a positive "can do" attitude and be willing to work collaboratively.
  • Must have a proactive approach to keeping our systems and data safe.
  • Must have project management skills.
  • Must have a strong passion for advancing the technical development of our catalog.
  • Bonus(es): Experience with user-centered design research and/or open-sourced code.
