Can you help a local nonprofit serving the mentally ill for a few hours on Saturdays?
ALL THAT'S NEEDED: Compassion, a helpful spirit, and ability to do basic office tasks!
Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency (BOSS) provides housing, health, income, and social justice programs across Alameda County. Since 1971, BOSS has served homeless, low income, disabled, and formerly incarcerated individuals and families, to help them acquire health, stability, and lasting wellness!
We are looking for a greeter to help at our Services Team in downtown Oakland!
WHEN: Saturdays, between the hours of 9:30 am-2:30 pm
WHAT: Welcome people to the office, do some filing, take messages, take notes from the psychiatrist when needed, and provide any support he might need in the moment
SKILLS NEEDED: Reliability, compassion, humor, and basic organizational skills. No medical training or activities involved!
You should be comfortable with people who have persistent mental illness and be able to interact with them (offer water, snacks or food bank items).

Description
Since 1971 BOSS has provided housing and services to over 1,500 homeless people each year. We have programs for both single adults and families with children. Most BOSS participants are dealing with multiple challenges: mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence, illiteracy, lack of job skills, social isolation, trauma, and entrenched feelings of exhaustion and hopelessness. BOSS programs focus on teaching life skills, connecting people with community resources, and creating supportive and positive environments that motivate people and build hope.
Our services address 4 areas:
- HOUSING: Shelter, transitional/special needs housing, permanent housing assistance.
- HEALTH: Physical and mental health services, medication monitoring, drug/alcohol recovery counseling, socialization, case management for the seriously mentally ill.
- ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: Job readiness assessments, resume-building, job search assistance, job development with employers, job creation, adult education.
- SOCIAL JUSTICE: Community building, leadership development, and collaborative action campaigns on targeted policy goals.
