Pacific Pocket Mouse

One of the many conservation projects the Recovery Ecology group of the Institute for Conservation Research is working on is the Pacific Pocket Mouse. This species is endangered due to habitat loss and fragmentation. We are looking for volunteers available all day on Tuesday August 15th to participate in a project to make the release site in Laguna Beach suitable for the reintroduction of Pacific Pocket Mice. Volunteers will be gathering vegetation that has already been removed to place it in bags so it can be reomoved from the area to make the site suitable for release of Pacific Pocket Mice.

Volunteers must be available from 9am to 1pm on Tuesday August 15th. This project involves intensive and physically demanding work, volunteers must be able to do manual labor outside, stand for long periods of time, dig, bend, and lift. Volunteers must be able to follow written and/or verbal directions with minimal supervision. Carpooling will be available for the San Diego Zoo at 7am and at some other locations along the I-5.

BENEFITS:
This opportunity contributes to SDZG's conservation efforts by increasing awareness of the plight of the Pacific Pocket Mouse, and playing a part in the fight against extinction. Volunteers involved will gain experience and satisfaction knowing that they have directly contributed to the reintroduction efforts of an endangered species. Without the help of volunteers it would take many additional months before release would be possible.
