Volunteers should expect to work with several children during each 2 hour session. The children will have selected a book and then be matched up with a volunteer. After introductions the "buddies" will find a spot where they can work together for 20 minutes. The volunteer will encourage the student to read, help with specific words, pronunciation and comprehension. When they’ve finished the book the volunteer will help the child complete a worksheet. We give out "passports" to every child who registers for Summer Reading Buddies and each child gets a stamp on his passport for each day they attend. The volunteer will then bring the child back to our staff who will match them up with their next "buddy".
Summer Reading Buddies volunteer opportunties are also available at the Yonkers Riverfront Library. Please contact us for further information.

Description
JCY Westchester Community Partners is a division of Familly Service Society of Yonkers (FSSY).
Our literacy programs are based on the strong evidence that mentoring improves literacy. These intergenerational programs utilize the skills and life knowledge of our adult and student volunteers by putting it into service to help the children with the most need. Whether through mentors bringing their love of reading, experiences, and compassion to a struggling child, or supporting and educating the parents on the importance of education, our goals are always to break down barriers, improve our children's future, and enrich the lives of thousands in our community.
Our programs include SMART, Open Book, Holocaust Remembrance Program, Summer Reading Buddies, Reading Buddies After School, After School Programs and Intro2America.
