Senior centers are lively places that bring together older adults who want to be engaged in their communities and with their peers. The Department for the Aging (DFTA)seeks volunteers to lead a single exercise session during its Spring into Wellness volunteer recruitment campaign. Volunteers will lead a 30 to 60-minute class at designated senior centers throughout the five boroughs during the week of June 5 to 9. Classes will be on exercise, dance, or meditation.

Tasks:

  • Craft a program with moves that older adults can follow at their own pace
  • Conduct the program in a professional manner
  • Convey information in a clear and concise manner
  • Conduct class for people with varying levels of physical ability
  • Provide encouragement to center members

Requirements:

  • Provide proof of certification and/or prior exercise instructor experience
  • Work with participants possessing various levels of fitness
  • Demonstrate an approach to exercise that is both enthusiastic and encouraging for older adults
  • Dependability and punctuality
  • Strong speaking and communication skills
  • Exhibit patience and respect for older adults
  • Attend a DFTA Volunteer Information Session
  • Submit DFTA Volunteer Time Sheet(s) for completed service

Skills Preferred:

  • Ability to speak languages other than English desired, but not required

Training:

  • No additional training will be provided on the exercise program led by the volunteer
  • Volunteer will receive onsite orientation of the center

Time Commitment:

  • One day during the campaign period of June 5 to 9
  • Session will last 1-hour

Aging Connect assists Older New Yorkers with getting connected with age-inclusive services, resources, and opportunities available to them from NYC agencies, senior centers, and other aging-related organizations. During the COVID-19 Crisis, Aging Connect has served as the primary contact and connector for older adults and the families in need of food, services, and information about senior center closures.
