COVID-19 Update: At this time, our tutoring program is on hold as the libraries are closed to the public. If you are interested in becoming a tutor, please email your information to literacy@cabarruscounty.us, and the Literacy Services Coordinator will be in touch as soon as tutoring sessions resume.

The Literacy Services department of the Cabarrus County Public Library is seeking volunteer tutors to teach English as a Second Language to adult learners throughout the county.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be literate in the English language
  • Have childcare for any child under 10 years old
  • Have transportation to the library of your choice (Concord, Kannapolis, or Harrisburg)
  • Commit to tutoring once a week for one hour for a minimum of six months
Additional Information:
  • Choose your schedule! Pick a one hour time frame within the library hours (Mon-Thurs 9am-8pm; Fri & Sat 10am-6pm).
  • Client's English skills are assessed prior to being matched with a tutor. Training and teaching materials will be provided.
  • Knowledge of a foreign language is not necessary, but helpful (Spanish, especially).

Description

CCPL's literacy program offers the following services to adults in Cabarrus County:

1. Reading and writing assistance to English speakers

2. Teaching English to non-native English speakers

3. U.S. Citizenship interview and exam preparation

4. Reading groups for inmates at the Cabarrus County Detention Center

(We also built and maintain an inmate library within the Detention Center, staffed by Literacy Services volunteers.)
