Program Overview

The City of Philadelphia’s Mayor’s Food Policy Fellowship offers an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate-level students to learn about and contribute to the City’s work in combating hunger.

Mayor’s Food Policy fellows will research emergency meal policy for the Mayor’s Office of Community Empowerment and Opportunity (CEO), coordinate volunteers at designated soup kitchens, coordinate implementation of Meals and More programming, and collect data on emergency meal guests and providers. Fellows report to CEO’s food access manager. Fellows will help improve the quality of emergency meals served in Philadelphia, and will also gain valuable experience for careers in City government and non-profits.

The Meals and More Fellowship is an unpaid fellowship that will take place during the summer months. Fellows must commit to working 35-40 hours per week and must be available to work the duration of the fellowship program. Some of these hours will be spent in the CEO office, and some will be spent at meal sites.

Intern responsibilities include:

• Recruiting and leading Meals and More volunteers at their emergency meal sites
• Researching food insecurity and best practices in emergency meal service
• Collaborating with meal site supervisors to implement best practices
• Collecting and analyzing data on emergency meal guests and providers
• Researching social service providers and connecting them with meal providers
• Researching potential sources of funding, volunteers, and other resources
• Preparing volunteer training curricula to improve meal guests’ connections to social services

The Office of Community Empowerment and Opportunity will contact you upon assessment of your cover letter and resume if you are selected for an interview. Applications will be accepted through April 21st. Interviews will take place as applications are received. We are accepting applicants on a rolling basis. We are looking for fellows who can begin in June.
