About: Mayor Buddy Dyer’s Book Club - City of Orlando

What: Volunteers increase student literacy with groups of students in a fun and interactive way, while simultaneously preparing students for academic success by focusing on improving their reading comprehension. Students will then be able to apply these skills to succeed in their coursework!

Where: Select OCPS Middle Schools, City of Orlando Community Centers and Orlando Public Libraries.

Key Responsibilities: Facilitate an after-school book club and offer reading encouragement to improve reading comprehension.

Qualifications:

- Reliable transportation

- Must be comfortable leading discussions and activities with a group of students

- Must be passionate about reading

- Must be comfortable working with students 8-14 years old

- Attend volunteer training and subsequent volunteer orientation

- Must be of 18 years of age and over

- Must pass criminal background check

- Bilingual Volunteers a plus

- Time Commitment: Weekly session of one hour for a minimum of six weeks.

- Volunteers will gain valuable experience working with Mayor Buddy’s Book Club.

We are the leading organization for senior volunteerism in the greater Central Florida area, serving Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia counties. Just last year, 1,186 caring adult volunteers gave 438,683 hours of service. That is more than $9.5 million dollars worth of volunteer service being poured back into our communities.

Previously known as Florida Senior Programs, VCI has been the sponsoring agency for the REtired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Foster Grandparent Programs since 1977. Our 36 year presence has proven our aptitude for providing meaningful and impactful volunteer experiences.

VCI provides membership benefits and support to volunteers aged 55+, at no cost to the volunteers or their volunteer stations. Just a few of the benefits of membership include: Supplemental insurance while volunteering, a dedicated coordinator, and matching to find the perfect position to fit the interest of the volunteer.
