Dr. Barbara Reuer, an internationally-recognized leader in music therapy, founded Resounding Joy in 2004 and has guided the organization’s growth from a group of volunteers with a closet of instruments to San Diego's primary nonprofit provider of music therapy. Resounding Joy provides this service to underserved populations, like:

  • Service members and veterans with stress and trauma.
  • Isolated older adults
  • Medically fragile and/or hospitalized children

This year, Resounding Joy’s team of board-certified music therapists will reach over 1,500 individuals (7,000 contacts). An additional 2,000 individuals will benefit from volunteer-led supportive or recreational music. In alignment with its mission, the vast majority of Resounding Joy's services will be provided free of charge.

The Heart of a Child Concert

In 2008, the San Diego community lost a loving and caring young musician named Ariana Miller to congenital heart disease. Ariana was a gentle soul with a deep love of music. From the first moment of her fragile life, she responded to the rhythm of musical sound. As she struggled with her disease, surviving six open-heart surgeries and countless other invasive procedures, it was music that brought joy into her life. Although she ultimately lost her battle with congenital heart disease, her passionate love of music and its healing effect lives on through the Resounding Joy Ariana Miller Music with Heart Program.

Heart of a Child is an annual Resounding Joy benefit concert which provides funding for the program. This concert has become the premier showcase of the very best young musicians in San Diego County and features a diverse array of talented vocalists and instrumentalists. In 2017, due to the generous support of sponsors and patrons, Heart of a Child raised nearly $80,000, enabling Resounding Joy to continue providing daily music therapy at Rady, and expand services to patients with cancer. This has made an incredible impact on the care of these children.

Mission Statement

Resounding Joy enhances the human experience through the therapeutic use of music.

Description

Resounding Joy enhances the human experience with therapeutic applications of music. We uplift individuals and families with challenging conditions, help them achieve their goals, and support health and wellness throughout the community.

Our music therapists are highly-trained professionals who, after graduating with an approved degree in music therapy, complete a 1,200-hour internship and a challenging national board certification test. Music therapists’ education encompasses biology, psychology, and neurology, as well as training in voice, guitar, piano, percussion, and often other instruments to accommodate various evidence-based interventions.

We offer our powerful and cost-effective music therapy services through three main programs:

  • Healing Notes - music therapy to support children in medical care
  • Sounds of Service - music therapy to assist military rehabilitation
  • Community Connections - music therapy for all

The Resounding Joy vision is to expand international awareness and to increase access to the power of music for recreational and therapeutic purposes.
