Support from hospice volunteers can make all the difference in patients' lives.

BJC Hospice is seeking compassionate, empathetic individuals to visit terminally ill patients in the Saint Louis, MO, area (including Saint Charles, Jefferson County, Lincoln County and Warren County). This is a great opportunity to do meaningful work that will have a significant impact on the lives of the patients we serve.

This opportunity is for individuals 18 and older in the Saint Louis metro area who have about 3 to 4 hours of time available each week (weekday availability during the day is great but not essential). Volunteers visit patients in their homes, or in nursing homes, and we work to match volunteers to patients in their vicinity.

Volunteers support patients and their family members through:

  • Companionship visits
  • Respite visits so that caregivers can take a break
  • Light housekeeping
  • Visits to military veterans by military veterans (We Honor Veterans)
  • Creating life review projects (Lumina, requires some extra training)
  • Handyman assistance

Volunteers do not provide hands-on care. To ensure volunteers are prepared to help support those who are at the end of life (and to meet Medicare guidelines), all new volunteers must attend a comprehensive orientation (seven hours total). New volunteers also must be interviewed and background checked, must get a TB test and a flu shot, and must be vaccinated against Covid 19.

At least one year of volunteer service is requested. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate those seeking community service hours as part of a legal sentence.

To apply, you can submit a volunteer application at bjchospice.org, under Volunteer.
